Updates
Just an update for the current situation in Singapore.
From 14 June onwards, we can have social gatherings of 5 people but no dine in. So for father’s day celebration, we ordered whampoa steamboat to be delivered to my sis place. Family gathering is the best. Alan even bought Mr Coconut for us! So nice can especially I was really craving for it.
Then, we finally can dine in with 2 people from 21 June 2021 onwards. So thankful to be able to dine in.
Jianhui and I had a romantic date at Dusk on 24 June 2021 for our GILA 100km run celebration. Life is good to be able to dine in.
Looking forward to the day all of us can dine out with our friends…
Gila 100km Finale
Today is the day for our Gila Finale! It’s about 45km and we will need to conquer about 3 hills - NUS, Kent Ridge and 3 times Mount Faber! Sound exciting? I am kinda excited about this route I must say! And the discount of 5km from 50km is a big bonus!
We are supposed to start at 4am but Jianhui decided to let me sleep a bit more so we woke up at 4am instead. We also had a bit of Kopi Gao Siew dai plus home-made bread. Then we took at cab to the petrol station near Bukit Batok Park to continue our adventure. This time round, we only brought one bottle of mineral bottle plus handphone. Travel light! Before we got started, we used the toilet at petrol station. Doing race like this reminded me that toilet at petrol station is so important especially if you are racing at weird hours.
It’s relatively a flat route to NUS, so we kinda enjoyed the run as we could run and it’s an easy route until we reached NUS. We were on target, running at 6km per hour for the 2 hours. We bought M&M and Kit Kat at a petrol station. I would say this route is quite a happy one we will pass by many petrol stations
Thereafter, the moment we started at NUS, we slowed down quite a bit. We were quite excited fo complete the first hill at NUS as we know that we can have Prata when we exit from NUS. Running in NUS makes me kinda miss my Uni days in NTU. We used the toilet at NUS before continuing our run.
Then, it’s Prata time! We ate one egg and one kosong prata. So happy right? We seriously think that we eat more than what we run. So this explains why both of us can never lose weight. Haha.
And now it’s to conquer the 2nd hill at Kent Ridge. It’s my first time going to Kent Ridge park. I’m surprised that it’s quite popular with quite a lot of people. Maybe my mental becomes stronger after the crazy slopes at Bukit Timah, I find the climb to be quite okay. The really steep portion is the Vigilante drive which Ben made us run down and up again! 🤣 In general, my legs feel okay except that today the back of my ankle experiencing slight pain as I run.
We had a quick break on top of Kent Ridge by enjoying our Kit Kat. Then we had a toilet break and top up our water bottle.
After we are done with Kent Ridge, we ran to Mount Faber! It’s our final hill! We went to the toilet at the bottom before making our first ascent. Ben is really a genius. He practically made us go up and down Mount Faber by different route and exit. The route is not as tough as I have expected. Maybe I like Mount Faber, so this route is more enjoyable than I thought. Even the stairs up Mount Faber seems short to me. Or maybe I am so used to so many stairs and slopes now. Haha.
Then we ran to have our tummies filled at The Arc. We bought Mcd’s as per normal as fuel. It was so satisfying! Along the way, we went to the toilet at one of the petrol station.
After conquering our 3 hills today, I would expect to have a short run to ulu Pandan. However, to my horror, we have another 9km+ to go! I was expecting to run 45km today only so I was kinda disappointed to know that we have quite a bit to continue. Nevertheless, knowing that this is our home run (or rather walk) to our ending point, I tried to perk myself up.
By now, there isn’t much shade and we were literally sun tanning. We tried to jog as much as possible. And thankfully, it is rather a flat route back to ulu Pandan. And the best thing is, we were going to run past red hill market. I’m definitely looking forward cold drinks. Jianhui bought sugar cane, coconut and a bottle of mineral water. We drowned ourselves with all the water and so we continued our journey!
Finally we ran from commonwealth to Buona Vista and I know I am near to my ending point. I kept on telling myself I can do it… I have already ran more than 45km… what is this short distance. And so after about 2.1km along the park connector, we finally completed our Gila 100km run!
Yes! We did it! So happy that we did it together! Yeah!
Feeling so GILA!
Happy 43 months old Lexuan
I can’t believe it that it’s June now! Time really flies even when we can’t travel. “>_<
I was really sick in mid-May and I’m so glad that I am kinda back to normal now. When I was sick, Lexuan knows that I am unwell and she will ask me if I am feeling sick or better.
Now, Lexuan can really chit chat with us. Her common words are “same like me”, “for me”, “my favourite”, “mummy please”, etc. Whenever you ask her why do you need to buy this or eat this, she will reply, “Coz it’s my favourite”. Haha. It’s kinda funny. Everything also her favourite one.
When bathing at home, she likes to play with the crocodile. She will pretend to feed crocodile with milk (small shampoo bottles) and pour over him. She loves playing with bubbles.
She also likes to play role play. She will pretend to be teaching teaching me or she will sing, “it is our story time, it is our story time”. She likes to pretend to be 陈老师and will use her torchlight to check my mouth and hands just like what 陈老师 will do when Lexuan goes to school. She will pretend to be mummy at times and I am the baby.
When the government announced there is no dine in for phase 2 heightened, we bought Picnic chairs from decathlon. Lexuan saw the chairs and say she wanna picnic. And so we went to barrage there nearby to have a quick picnic. She totally loves it.
On a random day, she found my old hula hoop and suddenly wanna play it. However, due to old age, the hula hoop broke. She cried and wanted orange hula hoop. There is no orange hula hoop so we bought a small green one and a bigger pink one (for me). She will clap for me and say I am good whenever she sees me doing hula hoop. With the hula hoop, she will pretend it is performance time.
Whenever we play together during night time, she has different patterns. On some nights, she want to play campfire by hiding under the blanket or mattress. Or she will say she wants to play slide. And before she sleeps, she will want me to play different things with her. And now she finally knows how to play scissors paper stone.
Recently, her favourite is the Justice League toys from McDonald’s (Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Batgirl and Flash). Before flash was launched, she kept on asking me why I never buy flash. And on a random night, suddenly she told me she wants PJ masks. She has so many favourite toys. I can never catch up with her. She has different patterns to sleep too. Sometimes she wanna sleep on bed, sometimes she wanna sleep on the small mattress and sometimes she wanna sleep on her bed in living room:
Even Paulaner coasters can be her toys. She will ask me to either choose heart shape or dancing design. Then whenever we get heart shape, we will do heart shape pose with our hands. Similar, when we get dancing, we must dance.
At times when I raise my voice (I haven even start scolding her), she will be upset why I scold her. She will complain, why you talking me mummy. I don’t like you. I don’t want you. She will go looking for her dad. It will happen the other way round if her dad scolds her too. Sometimes, it’s so funny to see her behaving this way and yet it can get very irritating.
Ending off this post by wishing Lexuan happy 43 months old! You’re a big girl now! ❤️
Gila - Bukit Batok Park
In order for us to have a better life this Saturday, I took early time off and we went to conquer the 5km at Bukit Batok Nature reserve.
So we started where we ended yesterday (railway mall) at around 7pm. It’s a short run but our legs haven really recover so it’s a slow jog.
When we reached there, we needed to climb slope and more stairs. It’s the famous Lorong Sesuai road, famous for cyclist to do slope training. But this is nothing compared to Bukit Timah, so we can’t complain much.
Glad that we completed the 5km and we took bus home!
Gila recovery climb
We decided to go back Bukit Timah to complete the “unfinished” business! Despite feeling a bit sore from yesterday‘s run, I could still run up and down the slope. And we completed the climb much faster than I have expected.
Then it’s the crazy stairs again to Dairy Farm. The stairs are so high that I really hate it. Even climbing the stairs takes a lot of effort from me though even for going down.
And when we finally exit dairy farm, we were so happy to be on road (no more stairs)! Then we almost went on a wrong route but luckily we realized it early. Haha.
We walked to Railway Mall and completed one small loop as per Ben’s pre-determined route before ending it for the day. It’s 6km Done today!
Can’t wait to get started again to complete the route. Meanwhile, I need to really rest my legs and knees!
Gila 100km Part 1
Maybe we are too bored or what, we signed up Gila 100km by Running Guild. We can choose clock 100km at one go or multiple submission from 24 May to 13 June 2021. Elevation gain is 1,253m. To put the elevation gain in perspective, our Bukit Timah hill is 163m so you can imagine the slopes…
Jianhui and I have been doing recee for the past few weeks. And from the short runs, we can do feel that this route is not going to be easy. Nevertheless, we wanted to attempt this predetermined 100km route at one go. So, we planned to start this challenge this weekend either at 6pm or early morning. As I was feeling unwell on Saturday, we decided to start on Sunday 2.30am.
I must be too excited or what. I couldn’t sleep at all until midnight which means I only have 1.5hrs of sleep before Jianhui woke me up. When I am up, Jianhui has already prepared the snacks and water bottles! Feeling so loved. So our backpack has 2 packs or Oreo biscuits, 1 snickers bar, disposable raincoat, powerbank, handphone wire, ez link card, credit card, cash, sunglasses and water! Jianhui has the map, torch light and his favourite army jungle hat.
We left house about 2am and went Sheng Siong to buy 2 bottles of mineral water. Then we happened to see one empty cab and so we ran down the stairs to catch the taxi.
We headed to ulu Pandan to start the race. Seriously, if I don’t have Jianhui to navigate the route, I would definitely get lost! And so we started running in the dark at 2.45am. As what we have expected, it’s up and down slope. Definitely not as easy route as compared to the 3 reservoirs ultramarathon. During the run, we were kinda excited whenever we see potential Gila runners but they are always so fast that they will over take us and then they will be out of sight. 🤣
Not sure what happen but my left leg is strained, so I got this pulling effect whenever I try to run. Sian. Anyway our strategy is to walk but then it seems like we are walking so slowly that we are behind schedule. And so we kinda know that we are not going to make it within 18hrs for 100km.
And so after ulu Pandan, we headed to old Holland road. It’s all about landed property so far. From old Holland road, we headed to rifle range when we ran down the Swiss Club road… which is landed property again. Then we are back at Holland road again before we turn to Namly Avenue to see more landed property again.
By now, it’s about 6am+ and we are heading to Orchard road. Now, we see more condos and it’s no longer dark. The weather is not so sunny as of now. We are happy to find 7-11 to buy Nescafe coffee as both of us are feeling so sleepy right now. It’s our lucky day as the coffee is $1 per can so we bought 2. With the fuel, we feel more alive. However, I think I drank too much coffee as I needed to go toilet urgently. Finally, we reached orchard MRT station and I can finally relieve myself. After this, we continued our walk along Orchard road. Then we decided to detour to Forum’s McD’s to buy sausage McMuffin meal. Best decision ever.
After our breakfast, we continued our walk. We must be happy after our breakfast that we ended up walking the wrong route. We were supposed to walk Nassim Road but we ended up at orange grove road. Luckily, we realised this early so we could still u turn to continue at correct path.
From there, we headed to bontanic gardens, followed by Kheam Hock Road. By now, the sun is out and so we took out our sunglasses and jianhui started to wear his jungle hat.
It just seems forever to reach Macritchie. We went toilet at Mushroom cafe, top up our water bottle before we made our way to old Caldecott broadcast station. As Jianhui has came here before, he knows the route pretty well. Same old thing, up and down slope before we make it back to Macritchie. Back at Macritchie, we bought isotonic drink and top up our water bottles in preparation for the the finale. We also ate Oreos.
This time round, we running anti clockwise direction. At this time, I am happy to enjoy the shade. We also started to run and my legs don’t feel that strained. By now, Jianhui’s garmin battery is running Low so he started charging his garmin. However after charging, we realized the watch stopped the distance. So he got to restart his watch at 0.
Time seems to pass faster inside trail. I was really happy to see Jelutong hut but we still has to walk/run to Rifle range (again) before we reach Bukit Timah Nature reserve. My handphone battery is about 30% but I decided to charge my phone at the same time.
By now, we are about 45km+ so you can imagine how tired we are. When we reached Bukit Timah Reserve, here we go up and down the stairs. The stairs were really high so I had a hard time climbing up and down the stairs.
Around 2pm, we were finally back at visitor centre. We were supposed to climb the hill again but we decided to call it a day since we had clicked about 50km. It’s a pity that we couldn’t continue but we figured out that it’s going to be really late if we were to continue the run at Bukit Timah. It’s time to be home to see our girl. (I do miss her though when I am back home, she always gives me nonsense.)
We were so tired that we called a cab to fetch us home. Though I must say I’m kinda disappointed that we didn’t manage to clock 100km at one go, I guess we should listen to our body. Now, we need to plan another 50km!
Thanks Jianhui for being my guide as always and taking care of me. I wouldn’t be able to run 50km without him. Thanks dear!
